Tesla announced the first goal of the Berlin plant: to produce a model y body every 45 seconds

A photo shared by Tesla fans @ dercaspar shows that Tesla Berlin factory plans to produce a model y body every 45 seconds. The sign reads: “our team is supported by the robot corps, which can undertake tasks such as welding, riveting and bonding auto parts. With the advantages of high accuracy and fast movement, we can produce a model y body every 45 seconds.”
Prior to the event, Tesla estimated that the annual output of the Berlin plant at full load was about 500000 vehicles. However, if Tesla can really achieve the goal of producing one body every 45 seconds, the annual output of this factory may easily exceed 500000 vehicles. Elon Musk responded to these calculations and shared his views on these figures. “The Berlin plant is expected to achieve a continuous cycle time of 45 seconds. On average, it operates normally 75% of the time per week. If it operates all day, it is equivalent to 10000 cars per week,” he said
Through the analysis of the data, musk calculated that if the Berlin factory produces 10000 model y every week, the annual output can reach 520000. However, the Tesla CEO has explained in the past that it will take longer for the plant to reach peak production. Musk estimates that similar to the Shanghai plant, the Berlin plant will take at least a year to reach its peak production.
Musk also revealed at the event that the first batch of cars put into operation at the new factory in Berlin will be offline as early as next month. But he added that it would take longer to achieve mass production. Musk hopes to obtain operation approval and start production at the plant in the next few weeks. The economy minister of Brandenburg believes that the probability of the plant being approved for operation is as high as 95%. Musk said production would reach 5000 vehicles a day or “hopefully 10000”.
At the same time, Tesla has submitted a plan to invest 5 billion euros (about US $5.8 billion) to build a battery plant with a capacity of 50gwh near the Berlin plant, surpassing the 40gwh plant planned by Volkswagen in salzkitt. Musk said Tesla was worried that it could not recruit enough employees, and he called on people to “recruit talents from all over Europe”. He hopes that the battery factory can achieve mass production by the end of next year.
Once put into operation, Tesla’s goal is to produce model y with 4680 structure battery pack at the Berlin plant. Tesla also showed a sample version of its battery pack on Giga fest. The Berlin plant is expected to have its own battery plant, similar to the 4680 pilot production line on Kato Road near the Fremont plant.
In September 2020, Tesla released 4680 batteries and structural battery packs at its “battery day” event. For many years, Tesla has been using 18650 and 2170 batteries on model s, model x, model 3 and model y.
However, since Tesla is supporting electric vehicles to compete with traditional fuel vehicles, the company hopes to find new batteries with longer life, more affordable price, higher power and longer mileage. In addition, Tesla has also developed a new structural battery pack, which can reduce the vehicle mass and improve the rigidity and safety of the vehicle.
Among them, the 4680 battery has found the answer to the first question, and the structural battery pack is a plan for cars to be manufactured in Berlin and Texas. As early as October 2020, musk confirmed that the model y produced in the Berlin factory will use 4680 batteries and structural battery packs.
