SpaceX submits the application for “high performance” satellite link satellite antenna, which can be used in automobiles, aircraft and ships


Tencent technology news on August 5, US space exploration technology company SpaceX submitted a new application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Tuesday, local time, claiming that it is studying a “reinforced” and “high-performance” version of Satellite Link Internet satellite antenna, so that it can be installed on cars, aircraft and ships, and can also be used in adverse weather conditions.
SpaceX wrote in its application: “these high-performance satellite antennas will have higher gain effect, lower transmission power (equivalent omnidirectional radiation power (EIRP) consistent with other satellite antennas of SpaceX), higher scanning angle, and rugged characteristics for use in harsh environments.”
In March this year, SpaceX submitted another application, hoping to operate star chain Internet services on cars, ships and other means of transportation, on the grounds that it needs to bring high-speed Satellite Internet to trucks, cargo ships and international flights. But at that time, the company proposed to use ordinary satellite antenna technology. The only obvious difference will be that it will be equipped with a base to enable the satellite to be fixed on a moving vehicle.
In the latest application, SpaceX proposed to upgrade its satellite antenna to better withstand the harsh environment outside the mobile vehicle. For example, the company said: “this antenna will continue to operate under more extreme high temperature and cold conditions, will have better snow melting and ice melting capacity, and will bear more thermal cycle effects.”
SpaceX also requires permission to use a 12.2 to 12.7 GHz radio spectrum reinforced satellite antenna. This will give SpaceX greater flexibility to provide high-speed, low latency broadband services to users on the device.
The company added that “approving this application will be in the public interest because it will authorize a new class of ground components for SpaceX’s satellite system, which will expand the range of broadband capabilities available for mobile vehicles in the United States and mobile ships and aircraft around the world, especially in challenging environments, and the reinforced high-performance version of satellite antenna is more practical.”
For those who are worried about the damage of satellite antenna in hot or cold winter, “reinforced” antenna will be a better choice. However, it is unclear how much the high-performance version will cost when the current antenna model sells for $499.
SpaceX called on the FCC to approve its request as soon as possible. Other applications from the company also show that SpaceX is developing another iterative star chain satellite antenna, which will be smaller than the current model´╝ł Tencent Technology (reviser / Jinlu)
