Apple announced to stop production of the first generation homepod, focusing on the mini version

Tencent technology news on March 13, US local time on Friday, apple officially announced that it would stop production of the first generation of smart speaker homepod, which has been on the market for four years, and will focus on the R & D and production of homepod mini, which will be launched in October 2020. Although the larger homepod offers more room for sound effects, the mini seems to be more popular, along with a number of features in larger versions, including support for Siri, the smart assistant.
“Since its debut last fall, the homepod MINI has been very popular, offering customers amazing sound effects, smart assistants and smart home controls, all for just $99,” Apple said in a statement. We are focusing on the homepod Mini. We will discontinue the first generation of homepods, which will continue to exist while they are available through apple online stores, Apple retail stores and Apple authorized resellers. Apple will provide software updates and services and support to homepod customers through apple care. ”
Apple plans to sell the remaining homepods until inventory runs out, even though its online stores are sold out. Support will continue until the product is declared obsolete.
Homepod was released by apple on WWDC in 2017, which is the first time that Apple has entered the smart audio market, providing voice access to Siri and homekit for users without the support of iPhone, iPad or Mac. The device is powered by A8 processor and adopts advanced audio technology, such as beamforming microphone, adaptive audio and advanced echo cancellation system.
As a flagship device, the homepod has not been attractive, largely because of its high price of $349. Apple later lowered the price to $299, but it was still too high for consumers to accept. Although Apple boasts amazing sound effects on a small device like homepod, its performance, especially its matching “stereo” mode, is still eclipsed by the market price of home theater settings.
Apple’s announcement may not come as a shock because homepod hasn’t had a hardware update in four years. Apple seems more content to promote the development of homepod mini, a smaller, low tech device launched in 2020 with all the same connectivity and intelligent functions as its larger version. Although it lacks the audio capability of seven treble speaker arrays and large bass speakers, the smaller homepod MINI has more functions, newer internal structure, and can realize physical switching and other functions. Perhaps most importantly, the device is cheaper.
The first generation of homepod is an audio engineering feat that Apple has spent more than five years developing. In order to complete the development, Apple’s team has built a complete development center near its headquarters in Cupertino, with a world-class development environment and more than a dozen anechoic chambers, one of which is the largest anechoic chamber outside the academic use in the United States. At the center, Apple has taken a lot of extra steps and launched a series of extremely complex high and low pitch speakers that build a unique sound space. (Tencent technology reviser / Jinlu)
