Tencent technology news on March 5, Beijing time, Market Research Institute canalys released the 2020 China smartphone market shipment report. The report shows that Chinese mainland mobile phone market in the fourth quarter of 2020 shipped 84 million units, down 4% from the same period last year. In 2020, the year-on-year output of Huawei dropped by 11% to 330 million units. Huawei’s performance deteriorated rapidly and the overall market recovery was hindered.
In the fourth quarter of 2020, Huawei (including glory) shipped 18.8 million units, and its market share dropped to 22% from 41% in the third quarter of 2020.
Oppo quickly rose to second place with 17.2 million smartphones shipped, up 23% year on year.
Vivo also achieved a good 20% year-on-year growth, ranking third with 15.7 million units.
Apple also achieved its best shipping performance in China in recent years, with more than 15.3 million units shipped in the fourth quarter, with a market share of 18%, higher than 15% in the fourth quarter of 2019.
Xiaomi ranked fifth, with 12.2 million units delivered, up 52% year on year.
Nicole Peng, vice president of canalys mobile business, commented, “Huawei’s fourth quarter shipment volume shrank nearly 50% year on year. Although Huawei’s product demand is still huge, Huawei will not be able to meet the demand in the foreseeable future. Other leading manufacturers are aiming at this opportunity. Oppo, vivo and Xiaomi compete for Huawei’s offline channel resources all over the country, including channel partners in villages and towns, and invest huge funds in store expansion and marketing support. These measures brought immediate results, and the market share rose rapidly in just a few months. Active expansion is the key word of oppo, vivo and Xiaomi’s channel construction in 2021. ”
“Apple’s performance in China will be remarkable in 2020. Driven by the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models, the annual shipment volume will finally return to the level of 2018. The fourth quarter’s shipment even reached the highest in China since Apple released the iPhone 6S in the fourth quarter of 2015. ” Amber Liu, research analyst at canalys, said Apple’s launch of the new iPhone 12 in China coincides with Huawei’s outage. Huawei is Apple’s only strong competitor in the high-end field, but its flagship Mate Series shipped less than 4 million units in the fourth quarter. However, Apple has not relaxed its marketing of the iPhone 12, including online promotion activities on major e-commerce platforms across the country, more replacement plans for old for new, and the most extensive interest free installment payment on the market in cooperation with major banks, all of which are conducive to boosting the delivery performance of Apple’s new phones. ” Amber Liu said.
“Glory is also a player we should not ignore in China in 2021. Glory almost fully inherits Huawei’s advantages and aims to win Huawei’s loyal customers, “said Nicole Peng. “As 5g becomes an essential feature of any smartphone on the market, leading manufacturers like oppo, vivo and Xiaomi will double their investment in their flagship and high-end product lines, focusing on the breadth of the product line and the use of high-end parts. With Huawei’s retreat in market share, consumers and channels will face more brand choices, while new or small brands will have more opportunities to stand out. In the coming year, the market pattern will usher in a wave of long lost turbulence and adjustment. “
