According to media statistics, from 2015 to 2020, Xiaomi’s patents in the automotive field reached about 800, and at the same time increased the international patent layout.
Tencent technology inquired 5000 patents with “Xiaomi Technology Co., Ltd.” as the main body on the enterprise search platform, and screened out 64 patents related to automobiles.
Although there is no direct relationship between patents and the final products, from the patent layout of Xiaomi, we may find out the route Xiaomi may take in the layout of cars.
Xiaomi has a patent for autonomous driving, but it’s not hard core
No matter Tesla in the United States, Weilai, Xiaopeng, ideal, the three new car building forces in China, and Baidu, which has just entered the market, all take the automatic driving function as the main selling point of current car building.
If you look at these dozens of patents carefully, you will find that Xiaomi has indeed applied for some patents related to automatic driving.
For example, a patent named “vehicle speed control method and device” can control the driving speed of the vehicle not to exceed the speed limit by obtaining the geographical location of the vehicle and according to the speed limit information of the location.
A patent named “car whistle volume adjustment method and device” controls the car’s whistle volume by identifying whether it is a pedestrian or a car in front of the car. When it is a pedestrian in front of the car, it reduces the car’s whistle volume, reduces the damage caused by excessive whistle volume to pedestrians, and makes the car’s whistle volume more humanized.
However, judging from the description of the two patents, Xiaomi’s patent on automatic driving is not so “hard core”.
Taking Xiaopeng automobile invested by Xiaomi as an example, its NGP functions (automatic navigation assisted driving) mainly include basic scenes such as automatic overtaking, automatic speed limit adjustment, optimal Lane selection, automatic Expressway switching, automatic on ramp and off ramp, automatic emergency avoidance of lane change, as well as traffic cone identification and avoidance, truck avoidance, night overtaking reminder, fault vehicle avoidance and congestion road overtaking The use of Chinese road scenes such as car following, expressways and some urban trunk roads.
A Baidu patent named “control method and device for automatic driving vehicle” can combine the distance with the vehicle in front, and comprehensively judge the maximum speed limit of lane, user set speed, system speed limit and other dimensions, so as to ensure the comfort of automatic driving vehicle, and control the automatic driving vehicle to reach the destination as soon as possible under the condition of ensuring driving safety.
Judging from Xiaopeng’s automatic driving function and Baidu’s Patent Description, Xiaomi’s patent only has the initial stage of automatic driving. How to avoid vehicles in front, whether it will change lanes, and how to deal with more complex traffic conditions are not shown in these 64 patents.
Of course, after all, Xiaomi has not considered whether to officially enter the market. Previously, more business focuses were more on mobile phones and smart home, while automatic driving requires powerful artificial intelligence, image recognition, remote sensing measurement and control and other technologies. Xiaomi has few layout in these fields, which is also a normal phenomenon and can not be too demanding.
Patents give more consideration to the user experience in car driving
Although there are not too many patents related to automatic driving, and they are not too hard core, Xiaomi, which started with internet thinking and user experience, has improved the pain points in the current driving scene from this point of view. If we only search with the keyword of “user experience”, we will find that 11 of these 64 patents are occupied.
For example, a piece called “fatigue driving detection method and device” can detect the video image containing the driver’s physical signs, determine the driver’s driving state according to the characteristic information, and timely warn the driver in the fatigue state, so as to improve the driving safety.
If this patent can be applied in the end, the in car device will continuously warn the driver who is already in the state of fatigue driving, which may prevent the occurrence of traffic accidents.
In addition to safe driving, Xiaomi has also made improvements in the driving habits of users. For example, a patent named “intelligent method and device for reminding vehicle restrictions” can analyze the user behavior data of the user terminal, obtain the user restriction rules, calculate the vehicle restriction date according to the user restriction rules, and remind the user of vehicle restriction according to the vehicle restriction date.

Of course, these 64 patents are not all of Xiaomi’s patents in the automotive field, but we can see a basic context clearly: Xiaomi’s patents are not “hard core” in the technical level, especially those related to automatic driving, and there is still a big gap between them and the current new car building forces. However, as a mobile phone manufacturer, Xiaomi has accumulated more experience in user experience in recent years.
