Recently, at the 88th meeting of 3GPP TSG, 3GPP (the third generation mobile communication partner program) announced the freezing of release 16, the first evolution standard of 5g. This means that manufacturers can develop and manufacture corresponding products according to the standard, further enrich the application scenarios of 5g technology, and accelerate the process of global 5g network deployment.
Xiang Ligang, chairman of China Information Consumption alliance, said in an interview with science and Technology Daily that R16 Standard reflects the characteristics of “faster, higher and stronger”, realizing the transition of 5g from “usable” to “easy to use”. With the freezing of the standard, 5g can not only further empower thousands of industries, but also take into account the comprehensive factors such as efficiency, cost and efficiency, which is expected to give birth to a new digital ecological industry.
R16 standard is the crystallization of global industrial cooperation
If we say that in the first 10 years, people are committed to realizing “broadband for all”, then the next 10 years will be an era of “IOT 5g”.
Why is R16 so important? As we all know, 3GPP defines three scenarios of 5g: enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine communication, low delay and high reliability.
In the process of formulating R15 standard, it focuses on enhancing the ability of mobile broadband. It is the first standard for mobile communication core network to fully embrace new IT technology, which is of milestone significance.
“The 5g network of R15 standard adopts 5g core network for networking, realizing the standardization of new features such as large bandwidth and multiple antennas, network slicing, edge computing, etc. for the first time.” Xiang Ligang said that from the perspective of user experience, 5g independent network has become faster than 4G network. It is clearer to see blockbusters with 5g network and play games more smoothly.
R16 standard is the “upgraded version” of R15 standard. In terms of enhancing mobile broadband capability, R16 further improves 5g spectrum and network utilization efficiency, network coverage capability, service bandwidth provision capability and service perception.
The formulation of 5g standard is a process of gradual and continuous improvement. It took four years from R15 to R16. In the process of formulating R16 related specifications, more than 30 companies around the world participated in the technical discussion and standard formulation of 5g super uplink core standards. It can be said that the formation of R16 standard is the result of international cooperation.
China’s three major telecom operators, as well as a number of network equipment manufacturers, chip manufacturers, terminal manufacturers, etc., have also made contributions to undertake a lot of work such as project approval, drafting, proposal and revision of technical specifications. It is understood that about 40% of the manuscripts of R16 standard are contributed by the three major telecom operators in China.
According to public information, among R16 standards, China Telecom has led the development of 10 technical standards; China Mobile has submitted more than 3000 technical proposals, accounting for more than 30% of the total number of global operators’ proposals, leading the completion of 15 technical standards; China Unicom has submitted more than 1000 technical proposals, leading the development of six technical standards.
In addition, the performance of China’s terminal equipment manufacturers is also commendable. For example, oppo has output more than 1500 manuscripts, which has made outstanding contributions in multiple antenna, carrier aggregation / dual connection enhancement, terminal energy saving and other key technology fields, and plays an important role in multi antenna technology, industrial Internet of things, Internet of vehicles and other terminal related technology fields. Vivo is also unwilling to lag behind and submitted more than 2000 R16 technical proposals, which is the smooth freezing of R16 standard I’ve done a lot of good work.
The new standard will further empower thousands of industries
Among the three scenarios defined by 5g, the most challenging one is to support the scenario with low delay and high reliability.
“4G technology can achieve a network transmission delay of less than 100 milliseconds, which is more than enough in the scenario of consuming the Internet. However, it is far from the requirements of key tasks in industrial scenarios.” Xiang Ligang pointed out.
The frozen 5g network of R16 standard has the real system level low delay and high reliability capability, and realizes the 4g-5g interoperability problem under the network slicing application background, so as to meet the industrial applications such as smart Internet of vehicles and industrial Internet.
In order to support industrial control communication, the 5g network of R16 standard has realized high-precision clock synchronization (precision up to hundreds of nanoseconds) and time sensitive communication functions for the first time, which can transmit data messages to the destination at a given time.
At the same time, the R16 standard has become “smart.”. “The standard enhances the system architecture of the core network, and standardizes the definition of network data analysis function, so as to introduce AI and big data analysis technology into the network architecture, and improve the level of network intelligence.” Yan Huaizhi, director of the Institute of computer network countermeasures at Beijing University of technology, believes that if R15 is regarded as a short and fast “usable” standard, then R16 will upgrade 5g from basic use to comprehensive ease of use.
Yan Huaizhi, for example, for industrial Internet applications, the R16 standard introduces new technologies to support 1 microsecond synchronization accuracy, 0.5-1 millisecond air port delay, 99.9999% reliability and flexible terminal group management, which can achieve end-to-end delay within 5 ms and higher reliability as soon as possible, and provide support for industrial time sensitivity, making wireless network replace wired network in industrial control field Access is possible.
In the smart car Internet, R16 standard can support vehicle to vehicle communication (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure communication (V2I). By introducing various communication modes such as multicast and broadcast, it can support vehicle formation, semi-automatic driving, remote driving and other more abundant application scenarios of Internet of vehicles.
For the whole industry, the R16 standard introduces a variety of air port positioning technologies, and the positioning accuracy reaches the meter level, which is more than 10 times higher than that in the past. What does that mean? Data show that the traditional satellite navigation system can achieve positioning accuracy of 5-10 meters, while the positioning accuracy of Beidou system can reach centimeter level, and the positioning accuracy of “meter level” is between the two.

In addition, some basic functions of R15 standard have been continuously enhanced in R16 standard, such as significantly improving the cell edge spectrum rate and handover performance, which further reduces the power consumption of the user terminal. It is expected that people do not have to worry about the rapid power consumption of mobile phones.
“The R16 standard further enhances the ability of mobile broadband, and can better provide the business capability of large bandwidth, high reliability, low delay and wide coverage, so as to expand 5g from the connection of everyone to the connection of people and things, thus making the interconnection of everything possible to become a reality.” Yan Huaizhi said that in addition, R16 standard also adopts network self-organization, liberalization and automatic road testing technology, which can greatly reduce labor costs, improve operation and maintenance efficiency, and effectively reduce costs.
R17 standard is on the way
The 5g network of R16 standard is not the ultimate standard of 5g. At the moment of the freezing of R16 standard, R17 standard with the main characteristics of “intelligent network, refined capability and business extension” has been launched in full swing, such as supporting UAV flight control through 5g network, supporting direct communication between 5g terminals and VR / AR application.
“R17 standard will further improve the data acquisition and application enhancement for network intelligent operation and maintenance, wireless network slicing enhancement, precise positioning, industrial Internet and non terrestrial network communication capability expansion and coverage enhancement for vertical industries.” Yan Huaizhi said that it can be predicted that the future R17 standard will further extend the 5g capacity and face the vertical industry more comprehensively, and artificial intelligence will also be able to make a great contribution to it.
It is understood that novel coronavirus pneumonia was originally planned for completion in 2021, but the release date of R17 will be delayed by the impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic. Affected by this, device manufacturers planning to release 5g compatible smart watches will not be able to provide the latest wearable devices during the 2021 holiday. 3GPP is expected to hold a meeting in September 2020 to confirm the new schedule of R17 standard.
