Apple Titan’s new patent: auto color matching, reflectivity adjustment and haze adjustment


After applying for a patent for tintable or opaque windows, apple is now working on adding other layers to the windows to make them work. According to foreign media reports, Apple has recently been awarded several patents with Titan project, one of which is called “systems with adjustable windows”, indicating that it can be used for “vehicles and buildings”.

In addition to pointing out that “it is very suitable for vehicles and buildings equipped with windows”, the patent document also indicates that windows may be equipped with frosted surface or mirror coating to enhance privacy. Adding such a matte or mirror finish to windows is challenging, apple said. “If you are not careful, the window may become too reflective, may not be transparent enough to see through the window, or may cause other bad properties.”
Although the patent states that this function has the same applicability to cars or office buildings, it points out that cars should not be equipped with windows with permanent frosting or permanent reflective properties, unless it is to prevent drivers and passengers from looking out of the car. If you want privacy, you need adjustable windows.
“Systems such as automobiles may have adjustable structures, and the control circuitry in the car can adjust the windows based on user input and sensor input,” the patent document said
Most of the patent focuses on how to achieve adjustable windows by using a variety of other layers, each of which can be controlled separately. “Adjustable windows may have tonal adjustable layers, reflectance adjustable layers, and haze adjustable layers, each of which is combined with one or more transparent structural layers, such as a pair of glass window layers.”
The patent also states: “the adjustable components such as reflectivity adjustable layer, haze adjustable layer and tone adjustable layer can also be inserted between a pair of glass window layers.” Such layers will include “cholesteric liquid crystal devices and switchable metal hydride films”, and the reflectivity of light is variable.

Such windows will be “one or more layers of glass, polymer, conductive material, sapphire and other materials.” In any case, this composite structure allows for control and modification of specific layers.
In addition, in terms of car windows, Apple also revealed a similar function to Tesla.

Tesla and other automakers did take steps to develop glass to protect drivers from UV light. However, a more common solution is that Tesla owners will purchase rear market tinted roof glass to avoid the problem.
And Apple’s solution is to equip the top window, front window and side window of the car body that can be adjusted by the driver. Once they can adjust, they can realize automatic control. Just as many modern cars automatically turn on their windshield wipers when they detect rain, apple cars can also actively color their glass in a particularly bright environment.
