Facebook will push similar set-top box devices: videophone calls with TV


Sina Technologies News, Beijing Time, July 31, evening news, according to the American technology media The Information, citing people familiar with the situation, said that Facebook plans to launch a TV-enabled device this fall that can make video calls and play video streams.
According to the documents obtained by The Information and two people familiar with the situation, the device, codenamed Catalina, will use Portal’s video calling technology, which Facebook previously launched as a smart speaker device with a screen. Like set-top boxes such as Apple TV, the device will be equipped with physical remote control and video streaming services.
Facebook is currently in talks with Netflix, Disney, Hulu, HBO and Amazon to introduce these companies’video streaming services into new devices. The Information said it was unclear what progress Facebook was making in its discussions with these media companies.
Last year, media reports reported that Facebook planned to launch a TV-connected device.
